New Delhi, October 28 (RHC-PL) -- The Indian press today highlighted the almost unanimous condemnation by the UN General Assembly of the financial, economic and commercial blockade imposed by the United States to Cuba for more than half a century. Business Standard and Hindustan Times newspapers stressed that the vote held yesterday left Washington isolated once again.

Of the 193 UN members, 191 voted in favor of the resolution calling for an end to this punitive measure.

Both newspapers reviewed the intervention of the Indian permanent representative to the General Assembly, Asoke Kumar Mukherjee, who recalled that his country "has consistently rejected the imposition of extraterritorial laws and coercive economic measures that harm the progress and prosperity in the world."

The persistence of the blockade is against international opinion and "undermines the multilateralism and credibility of the United Nations," he said.

Israel and the United States were the only two countries that voted against the resolution, India.com news portal pointed out.

The Times of India quoted Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez, who said that lifting the siege will be essential to make sense of the progress made in recent months in relations between the two countries.
