UNASUR's Mission Delivers Report Prior to Elections in Venezuela

Caracas, December 4 (PL-RHC)-- The mission of observers from the Union of South American Nations, UNASUR, is presenting a report for the Venezuelan National Electoral Council, CNE, prior to the legislative elections on Sunday.

According to the delegation of the regional block, the document describes all activities since the installation of the mechanism on November 17th.

The report also specifies how UNASUR's observers will be participating the day of the consultation, said the general coordinator of the mission, José Luis Exeni.

The document also will reflect in detail what has been appreciated in terms of automated voting, the audits and other aspects inherent to the electoral process, he said.

It was added that the 40 members of the delegation, made up of experts of electoral bodies in Latin America, will be in 11 states of the country and the Metropolitan Area of Caracas.

Moreover, they will go to the municipalities in the border region with Colombia which have a state of emergency decreed by the executive to fight crime in the area.

Since its formal establishment, the Unasur mission met with President Nicolás Maduro; the head of the CNE, Tibisay Lucena; the military high command led by Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino; representatives from the leftist alliance Gran Polo Patriótico and the coalition from the opposition Mesa de la Unidad Democrática.

According to the head of the mechanism, the Dominican president Leonel Fernández, the observers will be completely impartial until the end of these elections.

Also, today enter into force the banning of sale of alcoholic drinks, fireworks, the carrying of weapons and heavy loads, established in Venezuela during electoral processes in order to increase security.

These rules will be in effect for three days, from 18:00 local time on Friday.
