Havana, January 18 (RHC)-- The Cuban General Customs Office confiscated more than 100 kilograms of illegal drugs in 46 drug trafficking attempts between January and December last year.

According to Juventud Rebelde newspaper, 43 cases were detected at Havana's Jose Marti International Airport, two at the International Cargo terminal and one at the new Mariel Special Development Zone.

Customs official Niurbis Alonso said that the confiscated drugs included 73.43 kilos of cocaine, 40.46 kilos of marijuana and 0.7 kilos of synthetic cannabis.

Alonso said that passengers frequently bring packages sent by friends or relatives and do not check the content of the packages. If they bring any article or substance whose importation is prohibited, the passenger can be submitted to the penal action established for the case, even if he or she declares not to be aware of the situation.

A total of 10 cases detected were persons that brought the drugs inside their bodies, exposing themselves to the dangers of such substances into their own body.

Others have tried to smuggle drugs into Cuba by bringing it in children's toys, shoes, canned foods, wheelchairs, and other imported items.
