President Raúl Castro Receives UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon

Havana, June 24 (RHC)-- President Raúl Castro met with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon Thursday afternoon in Havana.

The top UN official came to Cuba to attend the signing ceremony of landmark agreements between the Colombian government of President Juan Manuel Santos and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-People's Army (FARC-EP).

During the exchange, Ban Ki-moon expressed satisfaction with his visit here and commended Cuba for its significant contribution to the Colombia peace process.

The two leaders acknowledged the importance of the agreements for Colombia, Latin America and the world. They also termed as vital the role that the UN is now called to play in monitoring and verifying compliance with the agreements.

The UN chief and the Cuban head of state also addressed issues of mutual interest on the multi-lateral agenda.

Ban Ki-moon was accompanied by Martha Doggett, director for the Americas at the UN Political Affairs department; Myrta Kaulard UN resident coordinator in Cuba and Chang Wook-Jin, special assistant to the UN Secretary General.

Participating on the Cuban side was Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla.
