“The best medicine is the one that prevents us from being ill”, expressed Jose Martí, the Cuban independence hero, more than a century ago, and this conviction governs the health policy that is firmly applied in Cuba in these times when the world faces the Covid-19 pandemic.

Last night Cuban national television news refuted false information about the origin and spread of the coronavirus, and reaffirmed the favorable medical evolution of the four people reported positive with the disease, three Italian citizens and one Cuban male.

This Sunday, Cuban president Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, in his Twitter account, urged the population to comply with the health measures in order to prevent the spread of Covid-19 in Cuba.

“Fear does not prevent infection”, stressed the president, “but, serenity, discipline, a sense of responsibility, collaboration and the solidarity inherent to the Cuban people, can help prevent the spread of the virus."

The previous day Díaz-Canel had insisted on complying with the measures aimed at confronting Covid-19, which poses a threat to humanity, since it is already present in 125 nations, including 22 in the Americas.

According to data published on the CUBADEBATE portal web, coronavirus has infected more than 151,000 people worldwide, of whom 5,800 have died, and 75,000 have fully recovered.

The Cuban health system has demonstrated its effectiveness over the years, as acknowledged by the World Health Organization, and it is currently receiving requests for medical help from several Caribbean nations and the rest of the world, on the basis of the contributions that Cuban biotechnology has made in China to confront the pandemic.

The governments that supported the campaign of the United States against Cuban medicine, which decided to terminate Cuban medical missions in Brazil, Bolivia and Ecuador, are now placed in a vulnerable situation before their people.
