When it rains, it pours

In the U.S. over the weekend, the number of people with COVID-19 passed the figure of five million, with more than 162,000 deaths -- clearing showing how the management policy of the Trump administration has utterly failed.

On Sunday alone, 57,856 new positive cases were confirmed -- demonstrating a rapid spread of the virus in an area that covers from the Midwest to the East Coast.

Many experts warned that the situation is so daunting that mass testing, such as real-time PCR, is useless because, in the time a person takes the test and receives the result, if it is positive, it has already infected many other people.

In the United States, let's recall, there is no mandatory isolation and in some places not even the use of a mask as a protection has been imposed.  President Donald Trump is strictly opposed to any regulation that may affect the economy, which is badly damaged anyway.

The 9.5 percent decrease in Gross Domestic Product during the second quarter of the year is a devastating blow, the worst result in practically a century, since the Great Depression.

Those three months put an end to almost five years of steady growth, with low unemployment rates and a rise in consumption due to an increase in workers' salaries.

Now that situation has changed, and it is highly unlikely that in the 12 weeks until November 3rd elections there will be a miraculous financial recovery, that will bring out Donald Trump's intentions to remain in the White House for four more years.

The main focus at the moment is the creation of a vaccine, even if it appears and proves to be effective, the ravages are tangible in the first world power, which has been fragile in the face of the coronavirus.

The poor handling of these two crises -- both the sanitary and the economic -- has strengthened Trump’s rival, the candidate for the Democratic party, Joe Biden, who is implementing the best possible strategy, which is not to show himself in public, thus exhaustion and a misguided economy become characteristics inherent to Trump’s policy.

At the beginning of the year, only an enthusiastic part of Democrats supported Biden and now, due to the tragic situation in the country, he ranges from ten to fifteen points above his opponent.

Of course, it would not be wise to underestimate Trump and think he has been defeated beforehand, but we have to say that he no longer has all the ballots in hand.
