The Tenth Legislature of the National Assembly of People's Power was constituted

As 62 years ago when Cubans defeated the mercenary invasion of Playa Girón, this April 19 was also a historic day, when the Tenth Legislature of the National Assembly of People's Power was constituted, combining experience and youth, but above all commitment and desire to work for social welfare.

The broad representation of the different sectors of society was outstanding. The people were present not only through the 470 deputies elected at the polls last March 26 but also in the scientists, doctors, firemen, students, peasants, and workers, who were invited to the session.

As established by the Electoral Law and the Constitution, approved in 2019, the president, vice-president, and secretary of the legislative body were elected, positions for which Esteban Lazo, Ana María Mari Machado, and Homero Acosta were ratified, respectively.

Likewise, the deputies had the important task of appointing the new Council of State, an organ of the National Assembly of People's Power that represents it between one session and another, executes its agreements, and fulfills the other functions attributed to it by the Constitution.

With 21 members, the new Council of State has a large female presence, women represent 52%.

Leaders of mass organizations, such as the Federation of Cuban Women, the Cuban Workers' Central, and the Union of Young Communists, have been ratified within this body, which reinforces the presence of the people and their participation in decision-making.

It is important to point out that the formation of these candidacies was arrived at after a transparent, democratic, and above all participatory process. It was the result of the consultations of the National Nominations Commission with the 470 deputies, who represent the people who elected them with their free, direct, and secret vote.

A special moment was the reelection of Miguel Díaz Canel as president of the Republic of Cuba for the next five years, whose work at the helm of the country in difficult economic conditions, aggravated by the reinforcement of the US blockade, was highlighted by the legislators.

Salvador Valdés Mesa was also reelected as vice president. Likewise, the National Assembly validated using a unanimous vote, the proposals made by the President for the Council of Ministers and the Deputy Prime Ministers.

The new legislature faces multiple challenges such as strengthening the economy, which is currently going through a complex situation, and satisfying the needs of the people, with whom it must march, listen, dialogue, and explain.

This April 19 was another historic day, which, as Díaz Canel emphasized, had a large presence of the people for whom we are working and which demonstrated the commitment of all united to continue advancing and defending the revolution, since it is the way to conquer the greatest possible justice and welfare, the president stressed.
