Nicolás Dorr

Havana, December 18 (RHC)—Cuban dramatist, theater director and novelist, Nicolás Dorr, died in the Cuban capital.

Dorr, who also was a National Theater Award laureate, made his debut at the age of 15 in 1961, when he premiered his play Las pericas (The Parakeets), in which he mixed black humor, surrealism, absurd drama, free imagination and farce.

Immediately after Dorr appeared on the island’s stages, shaking the Cuban scenes, he premiered El palacio de los cartones (The Cardboard Palace) and La esquina de los concejales (The Aldermen’s Corner), all of them structured in one act. In the three plays he showcased his paradoxically cruel and tender childhood world. He later wrote La Chacota (three versions between 1962 and 1974), Un viaje entretenido (An Amusing Trip) in 1972, El agitado pleito entre un autor y un ángel (The Agitated Fight between an Author and an Angel) –a Cuban Writers and Artists Association UNEAC Award in 1972-, and La puerta de tablitas (The Wood Door) in 1978.
