Havana, April 30 (RHC) -- Cuba joins the celebration through international digital platforms to mark International Jazz Day on April 30.

On her Twitter account, Cuban permanent representative to UNESCO, Yahima Esquivel, made the announcement by referring to the call made by Audrey Azoulay, Director General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), to listen to the musical genre during the confinement due to the novel coronavirus.

Declared by the organization, every April 30, the world joins the celebration this year in times of the social isolation imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, but also with the aim of educating the general public about the virtues of jazz music as an educational tool and as an engine for peace, unity, dialogue and the strengthening of cooperation between peoples.

The official website of the United Nations (UN) explains that jazz breaks barriers and creates opportunities for mutual understanding and tolerance, it is a form of freedom of expression, it symbolizes unity and peace, it reduces tensions between individuals, groups and communities and promotes gender equality.

In November 2011, during the UNESCO General Conference, the international community proclaimed April 30 as ‘International Jazz Day’, a date that brings together local communities, schools, artists, historians, academics and jazz followers from all over the world to celebrate and learn about its art, its roots, its future and its impact.
