Portuguese singer Salvador Sobral has released a new album entitled ‘Alma Nuestra’, compiling a selection of well-known, timeless songs from Cuba, Argentina and other parts of South America, reinventing them and making them unique and personal.

Salvador Sobral won international attention in 2017, when he won the Eurovision Song Contest for Portugal with the song "Amar pelos dois," written and composed by his sister, Luísa Sobral. In doing so, he gave Portugal its first ever win in the contest since its debut in 1964, ending the longest winless run by a country in Eurovision history (53 years).

Performed completely in Spanish, Alma Nuestra is Sobral’s third album and his first with his group, which includes young Cuban pianist Víctor Zamora, along with two other Portuguese musicians --double bass player and prolific jazz composer Nelson Cascais and the versatile drummer and professor, André Sousa Machado.

The latest album by the Portuguese musician includes several Cuban boleros, among them ‘Oh vida’ written by Luis Yañez and Rolando Gómez and popularized by Benny Moré; ‘Si me comprendieras’, written by José Antonio Méndez, ‘Si me pudieras querer’ by Ignacio Villa, ‘Tú me Acostumbraste’ by Frank Domínguez, ‘Tú mi delirio’ by César Portillo de la luz, and ‘La gloria eres tú’ by Cuban composer José Antonio Méndez.

About ‘Alma Nuestra’, Sobral said it combines two of his musical passions: jazz and Cuban music.

A music video for the tune ‘Tú Mi Delirio,’ by Cuban composer César Portillo de la Luz, was released together with the album in late June.

Salvador Sobral and his group are currently on a tour of Spain, which includes their performance in the opening of the CubaCultura 2020 festival on August 19th.

First held in 2014, CubaCultura brings the very best of Cuban culture to Spanish audiences every Summer.
