Aldo & Ilmar López-Gavilán

Havana, May 9 (RHC)-- Award-winning documentary LOS HERMANOS/THE BROTHERS, a story of Cuba, music, and family, is opening May 14th (virtual and live) at the Laemmle Monica Film Center in California.

The documentary by American filmmakers Marcia Jarmel and Ken Scheneider, features the brothers Aldo and Ilmar López-Gavilán, virtuoso pianist and violinist, respectively –their professional and family relation marked by the US blockade of Cuba.

Described by maestro Chucho Valdés as a genius, Aldo López- Gavilán has a solid, vast work as a pianist and composer, trained in his native Cuba and at the Music Academy in London, the United Kingdom.

Likewise, his brother Ilmar López-Gavilán received training in Moscow, Madrid and the United States and has worked with legendary figures like Chick Corea and Gary Burton.

The documentary film, which had a special presentation at the 42nd Festival of New Latin American Film of Havana includes footage of the momentous first performances of the two brothers together on stages across the U.S.

Los Hermanos / The Brothers suggests what is possible when walls come down, and borders are crossed --the benefits of cultural exchanges between the United States and Cuba. Featuring a genre-bending score composed by López-Gavilán that he performs with his brother, the documentary also includes appearances by violin maestro Joshua Bell and the award-winning Harlem Quartet.
