Virtual debate on Cuban Revolution and its challenges

Havana, August 17 (RHC)-- A virtual debate began Tuesday, August 17, in Cuba to reflect on Cuba, its Revolution and the challenges it faces today.

Entitled 'Cuba Trending Topic: ¿qué pasó?' or (Cuba Trending Topic: what happened?), the panel deals with events on the Caribbean island state on July 11th, Cuban and foreign experts shedding light on the situation leading to the incidents, its root causes and main instigators.

The panelists will also debate the role of civil society organizations, culture and the media in the current Cuban context, as well as community work in vulnerable neighborhoods, inclusive policies.

Cuba is the common target of the so-called fourth generation warfare, marked by constant misinformation and slander campaigns –the so-called fake news-- by Cuban enemies in both, the mainstream and social media, which seek to distort Cuba’s reality, tarnish the country’s international prestige and destabilize the nation from within toward bringing about regime change.

Organized by Casa de las Américas, the Association of Cuban Journalists (UPEC), the National Association of Writers and Artists (UNEAC), the Association of Cuban Economists and Accountants, the Network in Defense of Humanity and the Martin Luther King Memorial Center, the virtual event can be followed live on the platform Jitsi Meet, with simultaneous translation into English, as well as on the YouTube channels and the Facebook pages of the organizers.

A second panel discussion will take place on August 24th, dealing with ‘Cuba and the pressing challenges posed by the US blockade, the Covid-19 pandemic and the acute economic crisis,’ while a third panel debate on August 31st will focus on 'People’s Participation in decision-making, dialog, and national unity'.

According to the organizers, the third and final debate, on August 31st, will feature a special presentation by Brazilian theologian and writer Frei Betto.
