Celina González
Havana, Feb. 24 (RHC)— Cuba’s record label Bis Music has released the music video for the tune ‘Cantando Celina’, as tribute to singer-songwriter, the late Celina González. It was directed and produced by renowned Cuban musician Paulo FG.
The tune was written by none other than maestro Adalberto Álvarez, who died in September 2021 due to complications associated with Covid-19.
Celina -- as the Cuban people fondly called her-- is considered the greatest all-time female exponent of música campesina’, traditional music of the Cuban countryside.
The tune and the music video feature Susy Noriega, singer with Paulo FG’s band La Élite, Susel Orietta Gómez –better known as La China—singer with Orquesta Revé, and María Victoria Rodríguez, a contemporary exponent of ‘música campesina’.
Along with Reutilio Domínguez, Celina González co-authored the tunes ‘Yo soy el punto cubano’ and ‘A Santa Bárbara’. Both tunes were hits here in Cuba and in many countries throughout the world.
In 1980, she won EGREM's Disco de Plata Award for her album ‘Celina’. In 1984, she won the award for Best Singer at the 27th International Music Festival in Cali, Colombia. In 2001, she won a nomination to the Grammy Awards in the 'Best Traditional Tropical Latin Album' category, for her album ‘Cincuenta años... como una reina’. The album won the Cubadisco Award that same year.
Her albums ‘La rica cosecha’ and ‘Desde La Habana te traigo’ were well received also by the public and critics alike.
Celina González died on February 4th, 2015 in Havana at the age of 85.
The tune ‘Cantando Celina’ is included in a new ten-track album entitled ‘Sigue Cantando Celina’ on the seventh anniversary of the artist’s death. It will be released later this year.
