World Arabic Language Day Celebrated in Cuba

Havana, Dec 19 (RHC) The purpose of extending ties between the Arabic and Spanish languages through cultural exchange was highlighted Monday at the Arab Union of Cuba (UAC), during the celebration of World Arabic Language Day.

The commemoration of the date was attended by the president of the Green Zone Foundation (GZF), Darwish Ahmed Alshebani, an institution whose objectives include building communication bridges between the Arab World and Latin America.

The event was also attended by the ambassador of the State of Palestine in Cuba, Akram Mohammad, the coordinator of the Second Commission of the National Youth Council of Colombia, Leonardo Villalba, and the president of the UAC, Yaimé Proveyer, among other guests.

In his opening remarks, Alshebani highlighted the importance of the Arabic language for the cultural diversity of humanity, as it is used daily by some 400 million people in the world.

During the ceremony, an audiovisual presentation alluding to the celebration, a play by a high school in the capital, and the inauguration of the GZF language website were presented.

The occasion also served to award institutions that carry out relevant work in defense of the reality of Arab countries, among them the Latin American news agency Prensa Latina, which stands out for its coverage of the international call for the cessation of the Israeli genocide against the Palestinian people.

According to UAC's Facebook page, since 2012 the World Arabic Language Day is celebrated every December 18, a date that commemorates its declaration as an official language of the United Nations, 50 years ago today. (Source: PL)
