The Cuban capital will host a South African Film Festival from October 6th through 12th, including six movies made from 1992 to 2007.
The sample, which provides an opportunity for Cubans to take a look at the history, life and culture of that African nation, is made up of films, such as Cry for the Beloved Land from 1995, by director Darrell Roodt, which is set to open the festival.
Sarafina from 1992, by the same filmmaker, is also part of the festival, featuring the performances of Leleti Khumalo, better known in Cuba as Miriam Makeba, and Whoopi Goldberg; Forgiveness from 2004, an intense and dramatic movie with extraordinary acting for which it won the Human Rights Award and Best Film Prize by the Youth Jury at the Locarno Festival, and the Audience, Best Film and Best Photography Awards at the Durban Festival in South Africa.
Also included in the festival is Football: More than a Game from 2007, based on true events, telling the story of five prisoners in the infamous Robben Island jail in the 1960’s. Drum by Zola Maseko and White Wedding by Jann Turner also make up the sample of South African films. Organized by the Cuban Film Institute, ICAIC, and the South African Embassy to Havana, the festival will take place at the 23 y 12 Movie Theater, with a double screening at five and 8 p.m.
