The exhibition Zona Franca or Free Zone got underway at the San Carlos de la Cabaña Fortress in Havana, featuring pieces from more than 240 artists.
San Carlos de La Cabaña, just by the Bay’s Canal, is hosting the Havana Biennial exhibition that includes more than one hundred collective projects and more than 240 artists, most of them born in Cuba, except for Cuban American, Andrés Serrano, and the Spanish and Angolan artists from the Conexiones cartográficas project curated by Catalonia’s, Consuelo Ciscar.
Havana’s Fine Arts Biennial, which opens on Friday, is gathering in the Cuban capital close to one thousand artists and 170 projects from all over the world. The pieces and artists are spread all over the city using sites that usually don’t hold arts exhibitions. Disseminated in the galleries and courtyards of San Carlos de la Cabaña, the exhibition displays the works of renowned and emerging artists in a very unusual harmony.
Another important gallery in the Cuban capital will be the famous Malecón or seaside wall, featuring the exhibition, Detrás del muro (Behind the Wall), curated by Juan Delgado and located all over the seaside drive promenade from la Punta Castle to Maceo Park. The exhibition showcases the creativity of some 50 projects by artists from Cuba and other countries, including José Rosabal, one of the members of the Ten Concrete Painters Group, which introduced abstract and concrete painting in Cuba in the 1950’s.
