Arlenis Sierra returns to the roads in the Giro a Toscana

Havana, August 26 (RHC)-- Cuba's best road racer, Arlenis Sierra, will return to the roads after her presence in Tokyo-2020 in the traditional Giro of Tuscany, scheduled from Friday to Sunday in that Italian region with the assistance of 171 cyclists.

Captain and leader of the professional cycling club A.R.Monex, the star of Cuban cycling is the current monarch of the race, category 2.1 of the UCI, having been crowned in its most recent edition (2019), since last year's was canceled because of COVID-19.

"This time he is going to comply without major pressures with the race, which is part of the end of the season, whose culminating point will be the road world championship in September," Leandro Marcos, a member of the A.R.Monex staff, told Radio Habana Cuba from Italy.

He stressed, however, that the club's goal is to "win the race," whether with Arlenis or another of its members.

"It has been a long year, with a lot of work and several setbacks for Arlenis. We bet everything on the Olympic Games, but we could not achieve a result. That's how sport is," Leandro reflected.

He said that after the Olympic Games, Arlenis returned to Cuba and spent a few days resting with his family and then resumed training for the end of the season.

In 2019 and racing for Astana, Arlenis won the prologue of the Giro a La Toscana - Memorial Michela Fanini - and then was second in both the first stage and the second stage, to become the first Latin American champion of the important Italian giro.

The Giro della Toscana, with final finish in Florence, pays tribute to the expedalista Michela Fanini, winner of the 1994 Giro d'Italia and who died that same year in a traffic accident.

The race was created in 1995 with amateur cyclists and became fully professional in 2002.
