Final of the 200-meter C-2 at the World Cup in Denmark

Havana, Septmeber 19 (RHC)-- Cuba's women's two-seater canoe further aggrandized its history at the World Canoe Championships in Copenhagen (Denmark), by adding to its unprecedented bronze on the eve a phenomenal silver this Sunday on the concluding day.

In a photo-finish final, Yarisleidis Cirilo and Katherin Nuevo took the silver medal in the C-2 to -200, in a vibrant race in which they clocked 43.89 seconds, just one hundredth of a second behind the champions, the Spanish Patricia Coco and Maria Corbera (43.88).

Cirilo (19 years old) and Katherine (18) had already made history on Saturday, winning bronze in the C-2 500 meters, for Cuba's first medal for women in the world canoeing championships.

The already historic boat had for the second day in a row the highest prominence among the other Cuban boats competing in finals in the Danish capital.

Before competing in the C-2, Cirilo was ninth in the C-1 200m final, José Ramón Pelier occupied the same position in the C-1 500m and Fernando Dayán Jorge was eighth in the C-1 5000m.

In the same distance, but in the women's category, the sprinter Cirilo rounded off her brilliant performance with a tenth place, in an event where she competed mainly to keep testing herself before the best and to run kilometers in a top-level competition.

Cuba said goodbye to the World Championship with three medals (0-1-2), in 16th place among 56 countries, led by Hungary, champion with 18 medals (6-8-4).

In addition to the two medals of the girls, the historic C-2 boat of Serguey Torres and Fernando Dayán, bronze winner in the C-2 1000 meters, also reached the podium.

With the excellent performance at the World Cup, Cuban canoeing closes its best year ever, in which it also won several medals in the World Cup circuit and its first Olympic gold in Tokyo-2020.
