Havana, October 4 (RHC)-- World's number one tennis player Carlos Alcaraz, from Spain, lost today in his debut at the Astana Open tournament to Belgian David Goffin.

Leader of the world ranking since his victory at the US Open in September, Alcaraz was defeated on Tuesday in the first round by Goffin, who won 7-5 and 6-3.

The Belgian, who entered the Kazakhstani contest after the retirement of Denmark's Holger Rune, inflicted the 19-year-old Spaniard his first defeat without winning a set since November 2021.

In other results of the tournament, fellow Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich was eliminated by Russia's Pavel Kotov with identical 4-6 scores, and Greece's Stefanos Tsitsipas beat host Mikhail Kukushkin 6-3, 6-4.

For his part, Italian Luca Nardi defeated Russian Alexander Shevchenko 7-6 (7/4), 6-2, and Russian Karen Khachanov defeated American Maxime Cressy 6-4, 7-6 (7/3).
