Dylan Berdayes is crowned at the Clemente Vazquez Chess Championship

Havana, October 29 (RHC)-- With quick draws in the farewell Cuban Dylan Berdayes fulfilled his two objectives in the Andres Clemente Vazquez chess tournament: he was crowned in the Elite group and completed the third and final Grandmaster (GM) norm.

His final presentation ended with a quick draw with Ernesto Giron from El Salvador, one of the eight visitors who animated the tournament, and with that he reached seven points out of a possible nine.

Berdayes, from the capital, won five games and agreed an armistice in the remaining four to stay, a performance that allowed him to leave in second place his fellow countryman Omar Almeida, owner of six points.

Almeida also did not tilt his king throughout the competition, but only managed three successes to round off a performance below expectations.

The podium was completed by another home player, Luis Lázaro Agüero, who added 5.5 units after beating Mexican Néstor Cofre in the bye.

As for Dylan's GM norm, it is the third after those achieved in the 2018 Capablanca in Memóriam, and the one last summer, when he won the Catalan circuit, in Spain.

The Premier section had Jamaican Shreyas Smith as the winner, despite falling in the bye against Guatemalan Sergio Miguel Garcia in a result out of any prognosis and that left him with six points.

Smith had shown a tremendous pace throughout the tournament. He even reached the final day as the lone leader and with the ambition of completing the International Master (IM) standard.

His best tiebreaker system placed him ahead of Cuban Jerzy Jesus Perez, who took advantage of his winning close against Dominican Gian Carlos Arvelo to also reach six points.

The host Michel Alejandro Diaz inscribed his name in the third place with 5.5 scores, after subduing the also local Ronny Manuel Lafont.
