Cuba team to Baseball5 World Cup

Mexico City, November 8 (JIT)-- The Cuban national team participating in the First Baseball5 World Cup 2022 held two training sessions on Monday, prior to its debut.

In the morning hours, the players stretched their muscles and did several technical exercises in a room set up at the Fiesta Reforma Hotel. It was not the ideal scenario, but the players completed several planned routines.

In the afternoon, the players were able to check out one of the official playing fields, located in the Zócalo. The team's director, Pablo Terry, was pleased with the exercises performed and about the scenario he explained to us....

"The court is not as we are used to, but it is the same surface on which we won the 2019 Open of the Americas. Unlike that tournament, this fence bounces more, so it favors us to better perform the fildeo with rebounding and shooting. The boys looked very good, despite the altitude conditions that have affected us a little. We are ready to do our job," he said.

Briandy Molina is one of the most publicized figures in the competition for his quality as a player. Members of other teams ask him for photos and talk animatedly with the Havana native, who has given courses on this modality in several countries. The captain of the Antillean team is very focused on the task.

"The team is very motivated and focused on the objective, which is none other than to go for the world title. The boys looked very well tuned in the first training session, especially in defensive tactics, which are fundamental in this sport," he said.

After the official training session, both Pablo Terry and Briandy participated in the pre-tournament press conference, where the trophy that the champion team will take home was presented.

Richard Baker, in charge of communication at the event, reported a last-minute change for security reasons: the final was moved up to Saturday night, November 12. It was initially scheduled for Sunday 13th.

The official opening was a beautiful spectacle loaded with cultural nuances referring to the host country.  Fireworks illuminated the Mexican capital.

In the duel that inaugurated the historic tournament, Mexico, boosted by the crowd that filled the stands, defeated Lithuania twice with scores of 5x3 and 4x2.

Cuba makes its debut this Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. (local time) against South Africa. In the afternoon session, at 4:30 p.m., they will face the Lithuanians. Expectations remain high and the goal is none other than to go for the world title.

Incidentally, Cuban José Caballero acted as tournament official in the opening match.
