Havana, June 6 (RHC)-- Cuba will take part with 511 athletes in the Central American and Caribbean Games of San Salvador 2023, according to an announcement today by the methodological technical director of high performance of the National Sports Institute (Inder), Óscar Nuevo.

"Our delegation will be of 511 athletes, taking into account that we will not go in women's water polo because that event is not being held," said the expert at the José Martí International Institute of Journalism, as reported by the weekly Jit in its digital edition.

The executive made a detailed analysis of the sports development in the area, with Mexico as a firm candidate to revalidate its reign in the event and Colombia's growth, and described the upcoming regional competition as the most competitive in history.

"It is good to emphasize that we are going to face one of the most competitive events in the history of the sports movement, since we have Mexico, which in Barranquilla showed potentialities superior to those of Cuba by winning 132 gold medals," he said.

"We also have Colombia, which has been preparing with great strength and also with a clear conscience of being able to achieve relevant results in San Salvador 2023", he added.

In addition, he said that Cuban athletes have had a preparation route according to the real possibilities of high performance in the largest of the Antilles to ensure a preparation according to the Central Caribbean event, to be held from June 23 to July 8.

"Recently an evaluation was made, sport by sport, and 85 to 90 percent have a satisfactory evaluation. The performances for the stage are in line with those we will have in the event," he stressed.

According to Nuevo, the Inder made a general purpose design to achieve the greatest number of medals over the environment of those foreseen.

"Our boys are going to squander courage and bravery, as is characteristic of the Cuban athlete, and to occupy the places we have designed for this competition," he argued.

He also highlighted the preparation of the Cuban athletic movement for an atypical year with several multisport competitions, including the V Alba Games in Venezuela 2023; San Salvador 2023 and the Pan American Games in Santiago 2023.
