Havana, August 2 (JIT) - Cuban Grandmaster (GM) Carlos Daniel Albornoz imposed his law in the rapid games against Kazakhstan's Alisher Suleymenov and advanced to the second round of the open section of the FIDE World Cup Azerbaijan 2023.

After the equality in the two classical games, as dictated by the rules, both contenders engaged in the dizzying exchanges.

The first round, agreed to 25 minutes, leaned towards the exponent of the Island, who led the white pieces. Then, he just needed to avoid defeat (draw) to send his rival back home. The advance was certified with a slate of 2.5 to 1.5.

The Cuban will be the opponent in the next round of the Egyptian Bassem Amin.

Albornoz is included for the first time in the second round of these competitions, as in the Sochi 2021 edition he lost in the first round to Czech Vojtech Plat.

Cuban fans were also waiting on Tuesday for the definition in rapid games of the duel between Luis Ernesto Quesada and Turkey's Emre Can, tied 1-1 after the classical clashes.

The extension of the match began with a pact in which Luis Ernesto led the white figures. Then, with black, came the unfortunate definition that ended his options in the tournament.

In the women's segment, Lisandra Ordaz advanced after two clashes with the American Jennifer Yu. Yaniela Forgas and Yerisbel Miranda did not have the same luck, as they capitulated in the opening round against Mary Ann Gomes from India and Klaudia Kulon from Poland.

On Wednesday, Ordaz will have a huge obstacle in the Russian number two in the world ranking, Aleksandra Goryachkina.
