Volleyball: Cuba's first win at Norceca Final Six in Edmonton

Havana, September 21 (RHC) - The Cuban men's volleyball team defeated Puerto Rico in four sets (3-1) on the second day of the North, Central America and Caribbean (Norceca) Pan American Final Six Cup in Edmonton, Canada.

The young disciples of Mario Raul Izquierdo won with scores of 25-22, 19-25, 26-24 and 25-18, in one hour and 32 minutes of play.

Opposite Alejandro Miguel Gonzalez was once again the spark plug of the Cuban team, scoring 26 points, which brings his total to 59 in two matches, with an attacking efficiency of 63 percent.

Other standouts for Cuba were assistants José Ramón Gómez (13) and Yusniel Martí (12), and center Thiago Suárez (10).

For the Cubans it was their first victory in the tournament after the initial setback against Mexico.

In another match on Wednesday, the United States overcame Mexico 3-0 to lead 2-0.

On Thursday Cuba will face Canada, on Friday they will face the Dominican Republic, and on Saturday they will close the preliminary phase against the United States.

The top two teams will face each other for the gold medal on Sunday.
