Washington, February. 12 (PL) - The Bahamian Devynne Charlton broke the world record for the 60 meters hurdles in indoor track with 7.67 seconds, in the Millrose Games in New York, competition corresponding to the gold category of World Athletics.
Chartlon beat the mark of 7.68 held by Sweden's Susanna Kallur set on February 10, 2008 in Karlsruhe (Germany).
"I was confident in my preparation for today. I had the start I needed and I kept it," said the new world record holder.
Charlton, 28, became with this triumph the woman to beat at the World Indoor Athletics Championships, to be held next month in Glasgow.
Up to seven women went under eight seconds in this already historic race: Jamaican Danielle Williams (7.79), American Tia Jones (7.79), Jamaican Ackera Nugent (7.80), British Cindy Sember (7.91), local Nia Ali (7.95) and Jamaican Megan Tapper (7.98).
Scotland's Josh Kerr, with a time of 8:00.67 minutes, broke the world indoor two-mile record.
In the men's 60m hurdles, the victory went to the American Dylan Beard, who set a personal best and a record for the event (7.44 seconds). His compatriots Daniel Roberts and Trey Cunningham closed the podium.
