Arevalo thanks IOC for decision related to Guatemalan sports

Guatemala City, March 20 (PL) - President Bernardo Arevalo thanked the highest figure of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Tomas Bach, for the decision to provisionally lift the suspension of Guatemala's sport.

By means of a message through his profile in the social network X, the president considered that it is a news that should give great satisfaction, joy, to the inhabitants of this Central American territory.

"The Guatemalan flag will fly in Paris in a full way and our athletes will make us hear our anthem on the podiums as many times as possible," said the head of state.

He congratulated the people of Guatemala and emphasized in the text that "when we commit, we deliver", in reference to the steps he promised to take in relation to this situation of the sport, caused by the previous administration.

"Our athletes will be able to participate again in the Olympics carrying our flag and singing our anthem", said Arévalo, who emphasized that Guatemala is moving forward.

After an executive meeting, held at its headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, the governing body of sport under the five rings made the announcement on Tuesday of the favorable measure for this country.

our weeks ago, the president met with Bach during a visit, which included five European states, and asked him for a solution to the suspension of the national Olympic sport.

The IOC applied the measure in 2022 when it considered that the government of President Alejandro Giammattei (2020-2022) put his hand in the elections for the head of the Guatemalan Olympic Committee.

The Guatemalan delegation is made up so far of 10 qualifiers for Paris 2024, when it managed to take 24 representatives to Tokyo 2020, with the fourth place of the mythical Cordón as the best performance.
