Bronze for Cuba's Andy Granda in Tbilisi Grand Slam

Havana, March 25 (PL) - Cuban's Andy Granda, world champion in Tashkent 2022, won one of the two bronze medals in over 100 kilograms at the Grand Slam of judo in Tbilisi, Georgia.

In the bronze medal discussion, Granda edged Slovakia's Marius Fizel to achieve the best performance of the Cubans in the event.

Granda dominated his group, then in the quarterfinals he disposed of Germany's Losseni Koné by ippon, and in the semifinals he was unable to defeat Azerbaijan's Ushangi Kokauri, world runner-up in Baku 2018.

For her part, Cuban Idalys Ortiz, London 2012 Olympic champion and several times world champion, finished fifth in over 78 kilos, losing in the fight for bronze against Italian Asya Tavano by shido.

Ortiz won three bouts in the competition, including one against China's Xin Su, recent champion in Taschkent, but lost in the semifinals to France's Coralie Hayme, who surprised her with 20 seconds left in the fight and beat her by ippon.

Cuban Ivan Silva (90 kg) won one bout and lost another and young Lianet Cardona (78 kg) fell in her first presentation.

Cuba was ranked 18th among more than 80 participating countries.
