Havana, May 20 (ACN)-- With a record for the meeting of 17.10 meters (m), the Cuban triple jumper Lázaro Martínez had a successful debut in the Diamond League of Athletics of the current year 2024, whose fourth stop was hosted by Rabat, in Morocco.

Martínez, indoor world champion in Belgrade 2022, and silver medalist in the universal outdoor competition in Budapest-2023, achieved the winning mark on the third attempt and managed to win the triple jump test against seven rivals.

He was escorted by the Cuban nationalized Portuguese Pedro Pablo Pichardo (16.92 m), Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion, and the Brazilian Almir Dos Santos (16.90 m).

With that result, the representative of the Island added his first eight points in the Diamond League and broke the tournament mark, 16.62 m, which had been held by Nelson Évora, from Portugal, since 2014.
Last March, Martínez, already qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, attended the World Indoor Championships based in Glasgow, Scotland, where he was very far from the podium with just 16.69 m, placing eighth among 14 competitors.

Three times gold in world events in the lower categories, the triple jumper from the province of Guantánamo finished second in Budapest 2023 with a mark of 17.41 m, a race in which his teammate Cristian Nápoles (17.40 m) came third.
