Las Tunas vs Granma
Bayamo, Jul 10 (PL) An eastern classic of Cuban baseball in recent years will colour the semi-finals of the current baseball campaign when the teams of Las Tunas and Granma meet in the semi-finals in search of a place in the final.
The Mártires de Barbados stadium in Bayamo will host the start of a clash that has become one of the most attractive in Cuban baseball, with both teams having won six national championships in less than ten years. Las Tunas, current champion, treasures, in addition to the 62nd Series tittle, the championship of the 2018-2019 season and after a long period occupying lagging places currently exhibits one of the most solid teams in the country.
During the regular stage of the current baseball tournament, the Leñadores took third place in the qualifiers after a 42-28 record and defeated the Tigres de Ciego de Avila 4-3 in the quarter-finals in an excellent and hard-fought play-off.
Granma, a four-time champion (2016-2017, 2017-2018, 2020-2021 and 2021-2022) is one of the most stable teams in Cuban baseball in recent periods, despite having missed the post-season in the previous season.
Led by coach Ángel Ortega in the regular season, the Alazanes (47-27) came in second place and defeated the Cocodrilos de Matanzas 4-3 in the quarter-finals by coming from 1-3 down and will try to maintain the momentum they have shown in their quest to reach another final.
The history of the Granma-Las Tunas matches shows 139 wins for the Alazanes to 115 for the Leñadores but without doubt the most transcendental match between them took place in the final of the 57th Series (2017-2018) when in seven games the Granmenses won their second national title.
Another new chapter of the Eastern duel will begin tomorrow in pursuit of preserving the dream of becoming the monarchs of Cuban baseball, although to achieve this purpose the winner of the match will face whoever comes out unscathed from the Industriales-Pinar del Río match, the other semi-final of the 63rd National Baseball Series.
