Copa America USA 2024

Montevideo, Jul 11 (PL) The South American Football Confederation, Conmebol, today issued a statement rejecting the violent incidents that occurred the day before after the semi-final match of the Copa America in Charlotte, United States.

It was the culmination of a fierce Uruguay-Colombia clash, which the Cafeteros won by a fair 1-0 scoreline.

Conmebol's statement "strongly condemns any act of violence affecting football".

It refers to the fist fights between Colombia fans and Uruguay players.

"There is no place for intolerance and violence on and off the pitch," the official statement said.

The text invites "everyone in the remaining days to pour all their passion into cheering on their national teams and have an unforgettable party".

According to allegations by the Celeste players, they had to forcibly intervene in the stands to protect their family members who were in danger.

Following the outcome of the tense match, Colombia will play Argentina in the final.

Uruguay will play Canada for third place.
