Havana, Aug 27 (RHC) - With a master class featuring children and the public weigh-in of the fighters who will fight in the Night of Champions in Havana, the activities for the 50th anniversary of the First World Boxing Championship continued on Tuesday, held at the Havana Sports City Coliseum.
In the presence of the star Roberto “Mano de Piedra” Durán, special guest for the occasion, the 12 boxers who will take part in the Night of Champions passed through the scales, in the presence of hundreds of fans who gathered in Havana's Central Park and the 150 pairs of children who participated in the Master Class conducted by Cuban teachers.
In the evening, the Sports City Coliseum will host the first professional poster in Cuba in more than six decades, in commemoration of the IBA Boxing Day.
"Mano de Piedra" Durán sent a message to the children and the president of the IBA, Russian Umar Kremlev, and of the Cuban Boxing Federation, Alberto Puig, also spoke.
“I am very happy to be here and see so many children practicing this sport. Cuba is the best country in boxing. If you want to be happy, practice this sport,” said Kremlev.
On Tuesday afternoon, Kremlev will hold a press conference.
The highlights of the evening will be the 10-round bout between undefeated two-time Olympic champions Arlen Lopez and Julio Cesar La Cruz, where the IBA world belts and a prize of US$120,000 will be at stake.
Lopez, in the light heavyweight division (80 kilograms), will face Dominican Jose Luis Tejeda, who has two professional victories, two losses and a draw.
La Cruz, in the cruiserweight division (92 kg), will face Madiyar Saydrakhimov from Uzbekistan, an opponent he has defeated twice and who has only one professional win.
In other qualifying fights, two-time summer titleholder Roniel Iglesias will face Armenian Gurgen Madoyan (67 kg) and the new Paris 2024 champion Erislandy Álvarez will face Colombian José Ignacio Muñoz (63.5 kg).
Three-time world champion Lazaro Alvarez, who will compete against Uzbekistan's Mujibillo Tursonov and world runner-up Saidel Horta against Russia's Ruslan Belousov, in the 57 kg division.
