Victorious debut of Cuba in world youth boxing championship

World Youth Boxing Championship, Budva 2024

Havana, Oct 23 (ACN) Cuba achieved today its first victory in the World Youth Boxing Championship of Budva 2024, with the unanimous victory of Javier Alexander Rawlins, 86 kilograms (kg), against Türkiye's Nege Huseyi Tekdemir.

Press dispatches from the city of Montenegro, venue of the competition, highlighted on Wednesday that Rawlins convincingly beat Tekdemir, a success with which the men's team of eight Cubans opens the way to the purpose with which it arrived at the world tournament.

The disciples of head coach Santiago Suarez, aspire to surpass the performance achieved in La Nucia 2022, Spain, where they won two gold medals, one silver and three bronze medals, a haul with which Cuba now has 79 gold, 23 silver, and 31 bronze medals, and leads historically.

The team is completed with Angel Manuel Sober (48 kg), Kevin Alejandro Sanchez (54 kg), Yojader Fuentes (57 kg), Yoelvis Leyan Tejera (63.5 kg), David Manuel Espinosa (67 kg), Yurisniel Abreu (75 kg) and Jorge Luis Mayeta (80 kg), also under the command of coaches Walfrido Ilizástigui and Armando David Camara.

The world championship has the participation of 593 fighters -413 men and 180 women- from 73 countries.

The organizers announced three sessions per day until the quarterfinal stage, scheduled from October 29 to 30, the semifinal on October 31, and the finals on November 2 and 3.

In La Nucía, Cuban winners Ronny Álvarez (86 kg) and Adrián Fresneda (92 kg) won the titles in the Spanish orb event, Ewart Marín (52) won the silver medal, and Kryhztian Barrera (75), Pedro Alexis Veitía (71) and Luis Reynoso (80) won the bronze medal after falling in the semifinals.
