Brasilia, January 28 (RHC)-- The streets of Sao Paulo were filled with demonstrators on the city’s 463rd anniversary this week to protest against the privatization plans of the city’s newly elected Mayor Joao Doria.
Doria, who started his term as Sao Paulo’s mayor this month, is expected to take on the biggest municipal privatization drive in the history of Brazil. Activists from dozens of organizations gathered to protest in front of the Sao Paulo Cathedral, where the mayor was attending a mass to commemorate the city’s anniversary.
Doria has proposed reforms including selling off some of the city’s public assets, including parks, cemeteries and bus terminals, in a bid to raise capital and to modernize the city's public sector. The mayor, who starred in the Brazilian version of “The Apprentice,” has been compared to U.S. President Donald Trump.
