Brasilia, March 9 (RHC-Xinhua) -- Brazilian de facto President Michel Temer came under criticism Wednesday for comments made regarding the role of women, during a speech on International Women's Day.

Temer said women in Brazil had great participation in the economy, then added that no-one was as capable of pointing to changes in prices in the supermarket and that nobody identified economic fluctuations better than women.

In his speech Temer also praised his wife for leading him to appreciate what “all women do for the house,for the children.”

His statements led to rapid criticism on social media and the Brazilian press, stressing that Temer was spreading the old-fashioned mentality that viewed women as housewives.

Brazilian journalist and lawmaker Manuela d'Avila took to Twitter to say that on International Women's Day she wanted to write about her defense of the cause of women in the Legislative Assembly, but that then Michel Temer had come up to say the role of women in the economy was to stay aware of prices in the supermarket and want to have children, and that, she said, is not true.
