United Nations, March 14 (RHC-PL), --  UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein described today the conflict in Syria as the worst man-made disaster since World War II (1939-1945). At an event at United Nations headquarters in Geneva, the official accused the warring parties of serious human rights violations and called for an end to them.

Since March 2011, the Levantine country has suffered a conflict stemming from the regime change that the West and its allies are trying to impose in Damascus, with tens of thousands of deaths and millions of displaced people.

In addition to fighting between government troops and armed groups, many of them trained and financed from abroad, Syria is under the scourge of the Islamic State, which applies a regime of terror in various parts of the Arab nation.

According to Zeid, arbitrary detention, torture, abduction and forced disappearance are part of the daily reality of the conflict.

Damascus rejects statements by UN officials and reports that put the government at the same level as terrorists as to responsibility for the suffering caused to the Syrian people.
