Lima, July 14 (RHC)-- A Peruvian high court has rejected an appeal by relatives of former President Alberto Fujimori, who is sentenced to 25 years in prison for corruption and crimes against humanity.
The request, initiated by his daughter and opposition leader Keiko Fujimori, would have freed the former right-wing leader from his prison sentence. The court announced the decision on social media.
Keiko and his other adult children have long fought to get their father released, claiming that his trial and detention were not in compliance with the country’s laws. Last May, however, Judge Arnaldo Sanchez concluded that the former president’s rights were not violated.
Fujimori, who ruled from 1990 to 2000, is serving a 25-year prison term for corruption and human rights violations committed during his tenure as part of state crackdowns on leftist militant groups.
