Cairo, May 3 (RHC) -- At least two people have been killed and dozens more injured in clashes between security forces and protesters in the Egyptian city of Alexandria. According to reports, Egyptians rallied in many cities across the country on Friday in protest against the government’s heavy-handed crackdown on dissent.
Several protest rallies were held in major neighborhoods of the capital, Cairo, with reports indicating that similar demonstrations occurred in other Egyptian regions, including in the northern province of Kafr el-Sheikh.
A dozen protest rallies have also been reported in the central province of Minya. Anti-government demonstrators are outraged over hundreds of death sentences recently handed to supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood movement.
On April 30th, Brotherhood Supreme Leader, Mohammed Badie, and other members of the group were sentenced to death. Egyptian courts have decided to execute 683 members of the Muslim Brotherhood. The Brotherhood movement is now recognized as a "terrorist organization" by the military-backed government.
Hundreds of protesters have lost their lives in the political violence across the country. Egyptians launched a revolution against Hosni Mubarak’s pro-Israeli regime on January 25, 2011, which eventually ended the 30-year rule of Mubarak on February 11, 2011.
