Panama City, December 29 (RHC)-- The Government of Panama has announced a set of new measures that include tightening restrictions to contain the increase of coronavirus cases in the country.

Beginning on January 4th, there will be total confinement in two provinces and the weekend of December 9 and 10 will limit mobility nationwide in the provinces of Panama and Panama West.

The Minister of Health, Luis Francisco Sucre, expressed in a press conference that during this period the departures will be on alternate days by gender and ID to make purchases in pharmacies, supermarkets and other essential services.

Similarly, women will be able to go out on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, while men will be able to go out on Tuesday and Thursday, at times that will be marked by the completion of their identity card and only for basic purchases.

The head of the sector said that in the rest of the country only the limitation of movement by sex on alternate days will be in force and the curfew will be maintained from 19H00 to 05H00, local time, while the total quarantine will be effective on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 January.

In recent weeks, the Central American country has registered a vertiginous increase in infections and deaths from Covid-19.

On Sunday, 2,633 new cases and 42 deaths were reported, leaving an accumulated total of 231,357 infections and 3,840 deaths since the first infection was recorded in March.
