Brasilia, February 18 (RHC)-- The Brazilian Public Security Forum noted that in the first half of 2020, the South American country reported an increase in the femicide rate by 1.6 percent.

"Every two minutes a woman is assaulted and there were 120,00 cases of bodily injury during the pandemic," reported said agency. The Atlas of Violence presented by the Brazilian institution, reports in 2018 that every two hours a woman was murdered in Brazil, with a total of 4,519 victims.

Likewise, the report states that of the total number of gender-related deaths 68 percent were black women. Femicides of black women increased by 12, 4 percent between 2008 to 2018, stated the Brazilian Forum for Public Security.

From March to August 2020, the country registered a femicide rate per 100 thousand female inhabitants of 0.56 in 12 states; representing 49 percent of the female population.  Thus, 331 femicides were reported and the notifications of psychological violence to LGBTI+ people amounted to 1,819 in 2,018 victims.

In 2020, the director of the Feminist Health Network, Télia Negrao, had indicated that the number of attempted femicides continued to increase.  "The typification is very recent and femicides can be characterized as homicides.  What we can say, in fact, is a punctual reduction in notifications."
