Uruguayan women victims of dictatorship denounce rape before IACHR

Montevideo, March 20 (RHC)-- The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) reported on its Twitter account about the public hearing held with women imprisoned by the Uruguayan dictatorship, denouncing sexual torture during the repressive military rule.

The regional organization on human rights said that it "recognized the victims for their testimonies."  It also asked the State about reparation measures and offered to provide the State "with a technical note with standards on justice in cases of sexual violence."

According to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights "the State of Uruguay expressed its repudiation of the sexual violence suffered by the victims.  It also indicated the legal challenges that the justice system has faced in advancing the cases of human rights violations of the dictatorship."

In 2011, 28 women filed a criminal complaint before the Uruguayan justice system for sexual violence and rape against more than 100 aggressors, most of them military personnel, in the context of the de facto period.
