Brasilia, July 24 (RHC)-- Brazil has reached 109,000 new coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours, which is the second record number of daily cases since the beginning of the pandemic.

According to the National Council of Health Secretaries (Conass), 108,732 new cases and 1,324 deaths associated with the coronavirus were registered in the last day.  The number of new cases was only below the 115,228 registered on June 23 and exceeds the 100,158 registered on March 25.

Health authorities indicated that Friday's infection figure was due to the inclusion of infections that had not been counted in the state of Rio Grande do Sul.  The more than 108,000 people infected triples the daily average of 36,000 cases per day in the last week.

Brazil has 19,632,443 confirmed cases and 548,340 deaths since the first infection, on February 26, 2020, and since the first death, on March 12 of the same year.   Despite almost 109,000 infections, the pandemic in Brazil has been on a downward curve since the last week of June, according to the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation federal laboratory.
   
The South American giant has emerged from the hospital collapse recorded in March, April and part of June, and in most of the cities it has announced the return to on-site classes as from August.

As regards vaccination against the coronavirus, Brazil has applied 130.4 million vaccines, with 93.6 million administered in the first dose and 36.7 million in the second or single dose.  To date 36,533,170 people in Brazil are fully immunized, equivalent to 17.25 percent of the population.
