Lima, August 21 (RHC)-- The President of Peru, Pedro Castillo, swore in on Friday the new Minister of Foreign Affairs, Óscar Maúrtua de Romaña.

The Peruvian Foreign Ministry, through its account on the social network Twitter, confirmed the appointment of the new official.  The ministerial cabinet must now wait for the approval of the Congress, a session scheduled for next week.

Maúrtua has a diplomatic career as ambassador of his country in Ecuador, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Bolivia and Canada. In addition, he was Foreign Minister between 2005 and 2006, during the administration of Alejandro Toledo.

Local media reported that the new Peruvian minister was part of the transfer commission of the Foreign Affairs body after the official election of Castillo as president.

Maúrtua takes office after the resignation of Héctor Béjar, who denounced a campaign against him and that his departure occurred in the midst of manipulations by the ultra-right wing seeking to sabotage the new Peruvian government.
