Lima, November 26 (RHC)-- The Foreign Minister of Peru, Oscar Maúrtua, will take part in a meeting in Santo Domingo on Friday with foreign ministers of the area, in which preparations will be made for the XXVIII Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government, to be held in the Dominican Republic.

The meeting between foreign ministers aims to strengthen cooperation and political relations in Ibero-America among the 22 member states of the Ibero-American General Secretariat (Segib).  Peru hosts since 2019 the Andean Subregional Office of Segib, in charge of the work in the sub-region (Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela).

On the other hand, it nominates former Foreign Minister José Antonio García Belaunde for the position of Ibero-American Secretary General.

Local media highlight statements made by the Peruvian Foreign Ministry that García Belaunde's broad and outstanding professional career would be valuable to execute a consensual agenda for the benefit of the Ibero-American region.

From 2019 to date, Peru maintains in execution 169 cooperation projects and programs in the Ibero-American framework, which are monitored through the sub-regional Segib.

For Peru, the meeting of Foreign Ministers that begins this Friday also means the opportunity to benefit from the different cooperation projects conducted by Segib and to maintain a close relationship with Spain and Portugal.

The occasion will serve to consolidate the Ibero-American Cultural Space (ECI) and open the way for Peru's cultural industry, thus contributing to the recovery of this sector, severely affected by the pandemic.

Strengthening national sectoral public policies, encouraging political dialogue among Ibero-American countries, as well as technical and financial cooperation, are other important issues to be addressed.
