The government of President Pedro Castillo plans to issue a decree next January to connect schools in rural areas with internet.

Lima, December 25 (RHC)-- Peruvian authorities have held a working meeting focused on providing free internet to schools in rural communities in the country, with the aim of reducing the digital divide.

The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) reported on its Twitter social network account that the Deputy Minister of Communications, Fabiola Caballero, led the session with officials from the Ministries of Education and Health.

The purpose of the meeting was to concretize the goal of "providing Internet service in rural schools, in favor of thousands of children," said the Transport and Communications portfolio.  "We are working to close the digital connectivity gap in the country," the agency stressed.

In another tweet, the MTC stressed that the objective is to "enable free and progressive Internet access in schools and other public entities in rural areas."

The working meeting was also attended by the Deputy Minister of Health Benefits and Insurance, Augusto Tarazona, and the vice-minister of Pedagogical Management, Nelly Palomino.  In a press release, the MTC indicated in recent days that the government of President Pedro Castillo plans to issue an emergency decree next January to connect schools in rural areas with free internet.

The plan is to bring connectivity to schools and, from there, to radiate internet signal 200 meters around.
