Mexico City, May 22 (RHC)-- At least four migrants were killed and 16 others were injured after a road accident in the community of Yaalchitom, municipality of San Juan Chamula, Chiapas, in southeastern Mexico, with no known causes.

A three-ton truck carrying migrants from several Central American countries on dirt roads in the aforementioned municipality suffered alleged failures in the braking system.

So far there is talk of up to four migrants dead and around 16 injured when the vehicle in which they were being transported had an accident, informed the State Attorney General's Office (FGE).

Official sources from the Tsotsil municipality of Chamula explained that the accident happened around 11:40 p.m. on Saturday in the community of Yaalchitom, and that the alleged human traffickers' whereabouts are unknown, as they allegedly fled with injuries.

The State Attorney General's Office (FGE), through the Highlands District Attorney's Office, carried out the first investigations and initiated an investigation against whoever or whoever may be responsible for the crime of culpable homicide in traffic accidents and those that may result.

The FGE indicated that at the scene of the accident there were four men without vital signs and preliminarily 16 people of different nationalities were injured, of which 11 were transferred to the Hospital Básico Comunitario de San Juan Chamula and five to the Hospital de las Culturas in San Cristóbal de las Casas.

Of the injured, three are from Honduras, four are Guatemalan, one is from Nicaragua, one is from Ecuador and one more person was admitted to the hospital as unknown.   The four bodies were taken to the forensic medical service (SEMEFO) in San Cristobal de las Casas.

The State Attorney General's Office reaffirms its firm commitment to the people of Chiapas to guarantee the rule of law and reiterates that no criminal conduct will go unpunished.
