Bogota, June 24 (RHC)-- The president-elect of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, met this Thursday with outgoing President Iván Duque, to address the process of a smooth transition of the government, which will take place next August 7th.

The Casa de Nariño, government headquarters in the country's capital Bogota, was the point of the first meeting between the two since the leader of the leftist coalition Pacto Histórico won the second round of the presidential elections, held last Sunday.

Neither of the two offered statements about the interview, although photographs of the moment were released.

Subsequently, Petro, who will govern the country during the 2022-2026 four-year term, posted on his Twitter account: "Met with President Duque.  He showed me the mythical sword of Bolivar that we delivered.  Now I will take care of it and I will make sure that the Colombian people can see it and be its owner."

This Thursday the national registrar, Alexander Vega Rocha, and Doris Ruth Méndez, magistrate of the National Electoral Council (CNE), delivered the credentials to Petro and vice-president-elect Francia Márquez, with which they will be able to take possession of their respective positions on August 7th.

Petro won the presidential elections of Sunday, June 19th, with 11,292,758 valid votes, while his opponent, Rodolfo Hernández, from the League of Anti-Corruption Rulers, obtained 10,604,658 votes.

During this day, the president-elect and his running mate also met with congressmen to consolidate a national front aimed at unifying political and social purposes for all Colombians.
