Quito, June 24 (RHC)-- Supporters of the government of Ecuador's President Guillermo Lasso held a march on Thursday where slogans and racist phrases were launched against the popular protests in Ecuador, which are in their twelfth day.
The so-called "March for Peace" called by the Ecuadorian president and the metropolitan mayor of Quito, Santiago Guarderas, had among other objectives to insult the indigenous protesters. Among the shouts launched by the counter-march of the so-called "Quiteños de bien" was "Indians out, out!" showing the position of a conservative minority that tries to maintain the status quo.
At the same time, the counter-march has been followed by criminalization attempts by the Minister of the Interior, Patricio Carrillo, who has blamed the indigenous movement for alleged "terrorist acts."
On Thursday, police forces fired pellets and tear gas at demonstrators in the vicinity of the National Assembly and the Office of the Comptroller General of the State.
In response, the demonstrators burst into the Comptroller General's office, which provoked a series of violent confrontations between civilians and police officers.
Several human rights organizations state that during the days of protests 67 human rights violations have been committed, with four deaths, 89 injured and three disappeared.
