Miami, July 3 (RHC)-- Tropical Storm Bonnie, advancing in the Pacific Ocean, caused heavy rains in Central American nations on Saturday, reported the National Hurricane Center (CNH) of the United States (U.S.), based in Miami, Florida.

In its most recent bulletin, the CNH indicated that, at 03:00 GTM on Sunday, Bonnie was located about 270 kilometers south of San Salvador, capital of El Salvador, with maximum sustained winds of 95 kilometers per hour and a westward transfer speed of 28 kilometers per hour.

"Bonnie strengthens more, heavy rains are expected in parts of Nicaragua, Costa Rica and the southern portion of El Salvador in the course of the night," added the specialized entity.

The CNH mentioned that the tropical storm is strengthening as it moves parallel along the Central American coasts towards southern Mexico and is expected to become a hurricane by Monday.

The center of Bonnie made landfall on Friday night on the border between Nicaragua and Costa Rica, and entered the Pacific Ocean on Saturday.  The phenomenon caused rivers to swell, some flooding and trees to fall in Nicaraguan territory.  The department of Rivas, in the south of the country, is one of the most damaged, said teleSUR's correspondent in Nicaragua, Kenia Doña, on her Twitter account.

The correspondent of the news platform in El Salvador, Roberto Hugo Preza, said on the same social network that tropical storm Bonnie is already affecting this country.  Civil Protection confirmed that the torrential rains have caused floods, landslides, washed away vehicles, collapsed streets, fallen trees and evacuations in several parts of the country, the journalist noted.
