Ecuador confirms first death due to Monkeypox

Quito, August 9 (RHC)-- The Ministry of Public Health (MSP) of Ecuador reported on Monday the first death due to Monkeypox, at the same time, the entity detailed that the patient had a pre-existing disease.

In this regard, the undersecretary of Public Health surveillance, Francisco Perez, indicated that to date the country accumulates ten cases of Monkeypox, including the recently deceased person.

Also, Perez said that the last three cases of seismic smallpox correspond to people between 20 and 49 years old, coming from the provinces of Santa Elena, Los Rios and Azuay.  The confirmed cases remain under surveillance in their homes, and quarantines have been decreed for their close contacts.

On the other hand, the undersecretary of Public Health surveillance announced that an investigation is being carried out to determine if there is a relationship between these three cases. 

According to the health authority, it is necessary for citizens to maintain biosecurity measures, such as hand hygiene, and in case of symptoms, it is recommended to wear a mask and go to the nearest health center.
