Cairo, November 6 (RHC)-- Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, who is in Egypt to participate in COP27, informed Saturday that he proposed to Colombia and Brazil a South American summit for the defense of the Amazon, considered "the lungs of the world."

"A proposal that we talked about with (Colombian) President Gustavo Petro, and that I also discussed with (Brazilian President-elect Luiz Inácio) Lula da Silva last Monday, is to resume the defense of the Amazon," said the Venezuelan head of state.

He mentioned that the objective is the recovery of the Amazon, and to reverse, in a categorical manner, "all the processes of destruction of the Amazon, the great lung of the world."  Maduro indicated that "we have proposed to President Petro, to President (elect) Lula da Silva, to hold soon a South American summit in defense of the Amazon."

The objective of this meeting is, the Venezuelan ruler emphasized, "to reactivate the organization of the Amazon defense treaty, and we are going to bring concrete proposals so that humanity and the powerful governments of the world commit themselves to finance the recovery of the Amazon".

The Venezuelan president made these statements to the press after his arrival in Egypt, where he will participate in the 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27), to be held from November 6 to 18 in Sharm el-Sheikh.

The Venezuelan president affirmed that his country will be the voice of the nations of the South and of the member states of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America - Peoples' Trade Agreement (ALBA-TCP) at this international event.
